Overview

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a remote and adventurous journey through one of Nepal’s most secluded regions. Located in the western part of Nepal, Upper Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, making it a dry and rugged terrain that resembles the Tibetan plateau. This trek offers an unparalleled cultural and natural experience, showcasing ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, traditional villages, and stunning landscapes.

Upper Dolpo is home to the Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park, which protects the pristine Phoksundo Lake, rare wildlife like the snow leopard, and diverse flora and fauna. The region is inhabited by people of Tibetan origin, practicing the Bon and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Trekkers pass through ancient monasteries like Shey Gompa, known as the “Crystal Monastery,” and witness the unique lifestyle of the Dolpo-pa people.

The trek involves crossing several high mountain passes, such as the Kang La (5,360m), Saldang La (5,200m), and Jeng La (5,220m), offering breathtaking views of Dhaulagiri, Kanjiroba, and other peaks. The journey is physically demanding but rewards trekkers with unmatched cultural encounters, serene landscapes, and a sense of complete isolation from modern life.

Since Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, trekkers require a special permit, and it is mandatory to trek with a licensed guide.
