Overview

Langtang National Park, Nepal’s first Himalayan national park established in 1976, is a land of untouched beauty and cultural richness. Located just a short journey from Kathmandu, the park offers breathtaking mountain views and the warmth of the Tamang people, followers of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite the devastation caused by the 2015 earthquake, which destroyed homes, businesses, and villages, the resilient Tamang community has rebuilt their lives, welcoming visitors back to this spectacular region.

The park’s landscape is a natural treasure, with 25% covered by forests ranging from subtropical to alpine zones. These include deciduous oak and maple, pine, and rhododendron, which burst into vibrant bloom during the spring. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter Himalayan black bears, Himalayan Tahrs, Assamese macaques, and elusive red pandas. And while tales of the legendary Yeti abound, spotting it may be more wishful thinking than reality!

A key highlight of the Langtang trek is the sacred Gosainkunda Lakes, revered by Hindu pilgrims who visit in August and significant to Buddhists for the renowned Kyanjin Gompa monastery. The journey begins at Syabru Besi Village and winds through high alpine pastures where yaks graze, dense forests, and finally, to Kyanjin Gompa. From here, an ascent to Kyanjin RI offers awe-inspiring 360-degree views of the Himalayan peaks. The return journey takes you through lush rhododendron and bamboo forests, past cascading waterfalls, and amidst majestic, snow-covered mountains.

This trek provides not only an immersion into nature’s grandeur but also an opportunity to appreciate the indomitable spirit of the Tamang people, whose daily lives in this rugged terrain are both challenging and inspiring. With fewer tourists, the Langtang Valley promises a serene, peaceful trekking experience, leaving visitors with memories of unparalleled beauty and heartfelt hospitality.

The route ascends out of the Kathmandu Valley, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna Mountains, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and other majestic peaks in the Langtang region. Our first stop is Trishuli Village, from where the road continues to climb until we reach Dhunche, the entry point to Langtang National Park. From Dhunche, we descend for another hour to arrive at Syabru Besi, where we will spend the night.
Day 02

Trek to Lama Hotel (2,470m) Duration: 5-6 hours.

We start our journey by following the trail that leads us across the Bhote Kosi, or "Tibet River," which originates in Tibet. The path takes us through lush sub-tropical forests, eventually merging with the trail from Syabru Besi. From there, we descend into enchanting oak and rhododendron forests. Along the way, there's a good chance we'll spot playful Langur monkeys swinging through the treetops. The trail then becomes steeper as we ascend to our destination for the night: the Lama Hotel.
Day 03

Trek to Langtang Village (3,500m) Duration: 5-6 hours.

Our trek today begins with a climb through a forest, offering occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung through the trees. Upon reaching Ghora Tabela (3,000m), we leave the forest behind and encounter a Nepali army outpost. Continuing onward, we pass through several small settlements, home to herders who bring their livestock, including yaks, to graze in these mountain pastures during the summer. A bit further along, we arrive at Langtang Village, which has largely been rebuilt in a more modern architectural style. Yet, reminders of the devastation caused by the 2015 earthquake are still visible.
Day 04

Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,800m) Duration: 4-5 hours.

From Mundu, the trail ascends gently through lush yak pastures, offering expansive views as the valley widens. Along the way, you’ll cross several small streams and moraines before arriving at the settlement of Kyanjin.
