Overview

Mardi Himal is a stunning peak located on a long rising ridge, which extends from the southwest lower slopes of Mount Machhapuchhare (Fishtail), the iconic triangular mountain visible from Phewa Lake in Pokhara. As you’ll soon discover from a closer, more western perspective, the mountain’s unique shape gives it its name—Machhapuchhare, meaning “Fishtail” in English. Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively short and easy journey in the Annapurna Region, offering magnificent views of this majestic mountain range.

Machhapuchhare is the southernmost high point of the Annapurna Massif, an awe-inspiring cluster of mountains in the central Himalayas. This range includes five of the twelve highest mountains in the world, all within close proximity to the trail. Over the course of an eight-day hike through forests, above the tree line, and up to a high-altitude camp at 4,100 meters, trekkers are treated to breathtaking, close-up views of these towering peaks.

Throughout the trek, you’ll be immersed in a landscape filled with valleys, forests, lakes, and waterfalls. The journey begins in Pokhara, where you’ll drive to Phedi and then start trekking to Deurali. From here, the adventure truly begins. You’ll be captivated by the spectacular views of Mt. Machhapuchhare, Mt. Annapurna, and Mt. Hiunchuli. The national flower, Rhododendron, adds an enchanting touch to the landscape as it blooms along the trail. Along the way, you’ll also experience the culture and lifestyles of the local Magar and Gurung communities. This trek can be arranged as a private trip or as part of a group, depending on availability, and it is suitable for trekkers of all skill levels.

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m/4264ft), and preparations

Nepal’s vibrant capital, often referred to as the “city of temples,” lives up to its name with Hindu and Buddhist shrines and religious symbols adorning every corner. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, you’ll be greeted by a friendly representative from Alpine Ramble Treks, who will escort you to comfortable hotel accommodations. Depending on your arrival time, you may also have the chance to explore some of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the Swayambhunath stupa or the historic Durbar Square temple complex.
Day 02

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara by tourist bus

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, we'll depart for Pokhara in a comfortable tourist bus. The journey will take about six to seven hours, but rest assured, you'll never be bored. As we leave the capital behind, you'll be treated to views of Nepal's rural landscapes: lush jungles, terraced barley fields, glistening glacial rivers, and towering snow-capped mountains. Upon arrival in Pokhara, it won’t take long to see why it’s a favorite destination for thrill-seekers. Here, you can easily spend days bungee jumping, zip-lining, hang gliding, and whitewater rafting. But Pokhara is also the gateway to the Mardi Trek, where our hike will begin tomorrow. For tonight, we'll choose one of the best hotels available and enjoy a hearty meal before resting for the night.
Day 03

Drive from Pokhara to Phedi (1 hour) and trek to Pothana (4-5 hours)

After breakfast in Pokhara, we’ll begin our Mardi Himal Trek with a short drive to Phedi, where the trailhead awaits. From there, we’ll ascend stone steps through lush woodlands of rhododendron and pine. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Annapurna South, Mardi Himal, Manaslu, and Machapuchare. The hike will take around four to five hours, depending on your pace. Our destination is the charming village of Pothana, where friendly locals will greet us before we settle into our teahouse for a delicious home-cooked meal and a restful stay.
Day 04

Trek from Pothana to Forest Camp (4 hours)

Our next morning on the Mardi Himal Trek starts with a hearty breakfast and a steaming cup of tea as the sun rises over the Annapurnas. Once we’re ready to hit the trail, we’ll ascend through lush woodlands for about an hour, eventually reaching the breathtaking viewpoint at Deurali. Here, we can take in stunning views of Phewa Lake and the valley below, with the icy mountain peaks sparkling in the morning light. From this vantage point, we’ll continue through a forest of hemlock and oak, making our way to a ridgeline. After a steep descent, we’ll climb again to reach the Forest Camp (Kokar). This charming camp, made up mostly of teahouses, is tucked in a clearing where mist from the nearby ridgelines adds to the enchanting atmosphere. After checking into our guesthouse, we’ll have the rest of the evening to soak in the peaceful surroundings.
Day 05

Trek from Forest Camp to Low Camp (5 hours)

We will climb through rhododendron forests that are still dripping with morning dew after breakfast today. We'll travel roughly four kilometers in four or five hours today, covering one of the steeper portions of the Mardi Himal Trek. However, the payoff makes the effort worthwhile! The white peaks of the Himalayas will rise above the foliage as we ascend higher along slopes and ridgelines covered in forest. Tonight, we'll be staying at Low Camp, where we'll find a small cluster of trekking lodges and eateries offering regional cuisine. You can spend the evening at camp just unwinding and taking in the breathtaking views of Machapuchare and Mardi Himal.
Day 06

Trek from Low Camp to High Camp (4-5 hours)

Today’s Mardi Himal trekking adventure takes us through a magical cloud forest, where lush ferns and moss carpet the trail. After winding our way through the forest, we’ll take a break at Middle Camp before pressing onward. The journey continues as we climb beyond the treeline, leaving the dense greenery behind and entering a more open, rugged landscape. Here, the mountain views become truly breathtaking. Over the course of the day, we’ll gain about 500 meters in elevation to reach High Camp, our destination for the night. After a well-earned dinner, we’ll witness an unforgettable sunset, with sweeping panoramas of mountains bathed in golden light and shifting shadows as the sun dips below the horizon.
Day 07

Trek from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp, then trek to Siding (8 hours)

Here it is: the most thrilling day of our Mardi Himal Trek! We’ll begin early, as today’s journey will have us hiking for about eight hours. The adventure starts at High Camp, where we’ll ascend along grassy ridges and navigate a narrow trail that climbs steadily in elevation. In winter, snowfall may make the trail even narrower, so we’ll pace ourselves carefully. After roughly four hours of trekking, we’ll arrive at Mardi Himal Base Camp, perched at an impressive 4,500 meters. This is not only the highest point of our trek but also a highlight of the entire journey. From the base camp, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Himalayas, including Machapuchare, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. After soaking in the majestic scenery, we’ll begin our descent back to High Camp and then take a different route to the village of Siding. Here, we’ll settle into a cozy teahouse for a well-deserved rest.
Day 08

Trek from Siding to Lumre (3 hours) and drive to Pokhara (2 hours)

Our Mardi Himal trekking adventure is nearing its end, but we still have one final, exciting day of hiking ahead. This morning, we’ll embark on a journey to Lumre, a charming village about a three-hour walk from Siding. Along the way, we’ll pass through several vibrant communities inhabited by Brahmin and Gurung villagers, descending from the majestic mountains into the lush, green hill country. Upon reaching Lumre, we’ll take a well-earned break to rest and enjoy lunch. From there, our prearranged ride will take us back to Pokhara. The drive is a brief two-hour journey, and before you know it, we’ll be back in the lakeside city. After checking into your hotel, you’ll have the evening free to relax, freshen up with a long-awaited shower, and perhaps explore the city’s sights at your own pace.

The final leg of your journey takes us back to Kathmandu, where you can choose to travel by tourist bus or a commercial flight, depending on your preferences and travel plans. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, take the opportunity to explore Thamel, the bustling travelers’ hub, and pick up any last-minute souvenirs or keepsakes.
